Studying a language is important because the learner needs the language to function in the world in which they live. Language is more than the ability to speak because communication involves sociocultural competence, or using language in social setting appropriately; linguistic competence like the grammar and vocabulary; and actional competence which allow the student to understand meaning. I want my students to understand that studying English as a Second Language is going to give them the ability to connect with this world they live in. I believe a language mainly should be taught to students so they can speak the language. The learner must engage in conversation or output while learning to become better at speaking. They need to communicate with each other in paired activity to try to actively learn while receiving input from one another. Learners can acquire the ability to speak, read, and write through communicative strategies. I believe they need to view authentic materials, or input such as magazines, and newspapers to hear and see the language used in society. The students need to talk about real life situations with the class and teacher to be more aware of the world. I will take a magazine article and use vocabulary from that and have the students talk about the concepts in the article with other students. I believe students can be motivated to learn language. I usually give the students an outline of the new language topic when it is the new grammar and lecture interactively. The students supply the answers as we work on a new concept. This applies to the new vocabulary also. I will have the students in my beginner adult class supply the vocabulary for animals that they have heard and I will write them on the board while supplying more. I may give a homework assignment to look for and write down a bumper sticker you see and then we will determine the meaning in class. Culture is ingrained in language and I love to help the students understand the diversity. New ideas will arise with topics such as the role of the father in the home or weddings in this culture and theirs. For exams, I will have the students incorporate three new elements they just learned into a conversation the collaboratively write a conversation in which all three students in the group have three parts in the conversation because it is better than a discrete point test of grammar. I like to use realia in exams also with questions about the item. I will have the students create a power point of perhaps a trip they want to take for the purpose of using new vocabulary for a test. My goals are for the students ultimately to be able to read, write, and speak the English language. I encourage students to use strategies to help them be successful language learners. I show them how to create a vocabulary notebook. Vocabulary notebooks can be created in a file on the phone now. I show them how language works. I love to do an “idiom” a class. We use many idioms in English and these would not be understandable to the non-Native speaker. I allow the student to formulate their own sentences and paragraphs with the language. I have learned in the observations about presentation and try to be more accommodating by just greeting and smiling more. I know that seems trivial to some but I usually have been so in the goals of the class I just needed to relax and have fun and enjoy the students. In summary I feel that I am interested in learning and trying out more concepts and ways of teaching if it helps the students to learn more easily. I was interested in the Master’s program to learn all that I could about learning languages. I want to approach the language learning with a clearer idea of how to make language ability happen for the student. I will try to be accurate, interesting and challenging. I always try to be the best teacher and I expect the students to be their best.
